Hi guys!

Just a thought following my recent onset of breathing/lung problems. It's now becoming more clear that I might actually have two problems (yes, I am greedy!), a chronic one causing shortness of breath on exertion (had this for 6 months+) and an acute one causing breathing difficulties with wheezing in the upper respiratory tract, tight chest, some sort of swelling in the throat making it difficult to swallow and persistent cough (about 6 weeks).

Had a bad night last night followed by a breathless day today and I wonder whether my portion of assorted nuts eaten last night might well have triggered something. It seems possible looking at various incidences over the last few months.

Has anyone any experience of nut allergy? I certainly didn't used to be allergic to them but having started my new diet I am eating more (instead of crisps, biscuits and chocolate!!). None of the docs have considered this but I do wonder! Thoughts appreciated,

Lyn x

Hi Lyn. I work closely with a learning disabled client with a severe nut allergy and as he is unable to take care of his condition I am responsible for this and have done anaphylaxis training. I would advise that you play it safe for now and avoid any contact with nuts until you have been assessed. As you probably know nut allergy can be life threatening and can suddenly go from a mild condition to a severe one without warning. If you have experienced any swelling, rash or itchiness along with the breathing difficulty then an allergy is more likely to be the cause. However just as everyone's RA is different so too is anaphylaxis. Most people react within minutes to the allergen but for some including my client the reaction can occur hours later. I hope this is of some help. Best wishes from Naomi.

Hi Lyn,
Cor you are greedy. Yes a nut allergy could be a contributing factor.
My son has nut allergy first noticed after a bag of mixed nuts. Do take
care and seek advice, probably, withdrawing all nuts and then gradually
try 1 sort at a time. You will be the best person to decide if any are doing
any harm. Anne

Thank you for your thoughts!

I will steer clear of nuts until I know the outcome of the scans. I mentioned my thoughts to my GP but he is unable to test for allergens because my immune system is suppressed and the result may not be reliable. Will have to see how it goes ThumpUp
